A Nigerian wig seller's trade fair in Ghana was disrupted by Ghanaian hair vendors over cheaper prices. The incident, which took place in early May 2023, led to a video and photos of the disruption surfacing online. The "wig fair" organised by the Nigerian brand, Priceless Hairs, was met with posters by Ghanaian vendors, reading "Go back to your country", "No way for foreign retailers", and "You can't crash Ghana."
In a statement reacting to the disruption, the Nigerian brand urged calm and asked everyone to leave the venue. The statement also emphasised that the brand would not crash hair prices in Ghana. The situation has been described as a disagreement between two African nations who are members of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The disruption highlights the challenges that come with free trade and competition. It also underscores the need for African countries to work together towards economic integration and mutual growth. The AfCFTA, which was launched in 2018 and commenced trading in January 2021, aims to create a single market for goods and services in Africa. By promoting trade among African countries, the AfCFTA seeks to boost economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty across the continent.
