Nigeria Labour Congress Calls on Akwa Ibom Governor to Address Workers' Welfare Issues

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has assured workers of the state of a medium housing scheme before the end of his tenure. Speaking at the 2023 International Workers Day celebration held at Ibom Hall Grounds in Uyo, Governor Emmanuel confirmed that the project was already in progress, with some units ready for commissioning before May 29.

Governor Emmanuel appreciated the robust working relationship he has enjoyed with Akwa Ibom workers and organised labour throughout his tenure. He stressed the importance of the partnership between government and labour for the development of the state and urged workers to reciprocate government gestures by dedicating themselves to their duties.

In a solidarity message, the incoming governor, Pastor Umo Eno, appreciated the workers for their support in the gubernatorial election and promised to keep his part of the bargain upon assumption of office. He also assured that he would work towards furthering the mutually beneficial government-labour relationship in the state.

Elder Effiong Essien, the Head of Civil Service, described the theme of this year's celebration, "Workers' Rights and Socio-Economic Justice," as apt. He maintained that the current government has continued to do justice to workers' welfare by implementing policies that impact the lives of workers and retirees. He urged workers to reciprocate government gestures by dedicating themselves to their duties.

Mr. Amuboh Oroghene, the State Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, congratulated Akwa Ibom workers on the event and advised them to resist mortgaging long group interest for short-term personal gains in their quest for better working conditions.

Comrade Sunny James, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), called on the Governor to address some critical needs of workers, such as consequential pension adjustment of retirees, payment of gratuities and leave grant to all categories of workers in the state and those in the Local Government employ, promotion arrears for workers, refund of 7.5% deductions made for contributory pension to workers, logistics support to workers' unions, and other issues bothering on the welfare of workers.

The event featured a march past by various labour unions and organizations, and both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress acknowledged the sacrifices of workers to building the economy and the commitment of the current administration to improve workers' welfare, especially with regards to prompt payment of salaries and other emoluments.
