The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has reassured the safety and security of athletes and other participants at the forthcoming 10km Okpekpe Road Race scheduled to hold on Saturday, May 27, 2023. The competition, which will take place in Okpekpe Town, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, is expected to draw participants from ten different countries.
Speaking to journalists at the Government House, Benin City, Shaibu disclosed that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all participants, residents, and visitors who will be in the state for the race. He also unveiled the jersey for the 2023 race and called on stakeholders to support the event.
Shaibu said, “We are happy that the Okpekpe Road Race is kept alive as we are getting closer to our target to make the race a diamond label. The 2023 race will be on a gold label as we put in our best in making the race the best in the world. We have gone beyond the race as we have also brought in students to be involved as they learn. Sports sharpens our knowledge, physical ability, and reduces social vices in society.”
Innovations have been added to the race, according to Chairman, Sports Marketing Organizer, Mike Itamuagbor. About 200 students from Edo University will work as volunteers, and students from the Mass Communication Department will be part of the game. The Director of Organization, Zakari Amodu, disclosed that accreditation partners would be coming from Dubai and Netherlands to ensure the fair accreditation of athletes during the games.
This is the ninth edition of the okpekpe race has been described as a platform for promoting healthy living and fighting against cancer and HIV. Shaibu urged participants to consider running for a cause and not just for a prize. The event has been planned to commence on the 22nd of May 2023 with accreditation, while athletes will arrive in Lagos on the 23rd and proceed to Auchi on the 24th. The race will hold on the 27th of May 2023
