The Federal Government has budgeted N70 million for the 55th Independence anniversary celebrations slated to commence on Sept. 25, in line with the its cost-saving policy.

This was revealed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal on Tuesday

The SGF, represented by Mrs Ibukun Odusote, the Permanent Secretary (Political Affairs), said that government was cutting cost because of the present state of the country's economy.

"This year's celebrations is indeed low-keyed because the present administration appreciates the economic hardship that Nigerians and indeed the nation is confronted with.

"To address the situation, government has adopted a general policy to be very prudent in the management of our financial resources." she said.

This year's celebration according to her, is therefore in consonance with the cost-saving policy of this administration, stressing that the Federal Government would rather spend more money paying worker's salaries than on anniversary celebrations.

The President approved four events for the anniversary:
  • Jummat prayers, at the Abuja National Mosque on Sept. 25,
  • Inter-denominational Thanksgiving Service at the Abuja National Christian Worship Centre on Sept. 27,
  • Ceremonial Change of Guards on Oct. 1 at the Presidential Villa and
  • Children's party on Oct. 3. at the Presidential Villa
