The South African government has stated that it will arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the annual BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit, due to outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants for him and Russian politician Maria Lvova-Belova. The two stand accused of illegally deporting children from Ukraine to Russia, and as a result, 123 countries that ratified a binding statute are obliged to have the two arrested. Therefore, the South African government has invited Putin to attend the meeting online via “Teams or Zoom from Moscow”.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, referring to the BRICS economic group, stated that South Africa has been approached to play a mediation role based on their relationship with the Russian Federation. The group aims to strengthen the emerging economies of its member states.
The BRICS announcement of developing a new currency to reduce reliance on the US dollar and other Western currencies and to protect themselves from international pressure has caused a stir. Brazil and China have already agreed to bypass the dollar when paying for trade goods.
