North Korea has fired shots at South Korea this morning, according to government officials.

According to reports, the shots were fired at a loudspeaker in South Korea, but a spokesman for the South Korean government said there was 'no damage'.

It is not yet clear what weapons were used.

South Korea has however responded with ten rounds of artillery following the attack.

A South Korean military official was quoted by State-run KBS News saying that the North Korean military opened fire at 7am this morning on the western front.

The reported attack comes after South Korea's President Park Geun-hye said her government would respond firmly to any North Korean provocation that threatens the safety of South Koreans.

She urged Pyongyang to "wake up" from the delusion that it could maintain its regime with provocation and threats, which she claimed would result only in the North's isolation and destruction.
