The Ooni of Ife, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II has passed on Tuesday evening at the age of 85.

He passed on in the United Kingdom after he reportedly slumped and was flown to Lagos in an air ambulance and later to the United Kingdom.

Oba Sijuwade was born on 1 January 1930 in Ile-Ife and became the Ooni of Ife on 6th December 1980

He attended Abeokuta Grammar School and Oduduwa College in Ile-Ife, worked for three years in his father’s business, and with the Nigerian Tribune for two years. He later went on to study Business Management in Northampton College, UK.

He worked with Leventis and was later Sales Director of the state-owned National Motor in Lagos. He later formed a company to distribute Soviet-built vehicles and equipment in Nigeria.

In 2010, he conferred Chieftaincy titles on a number of politicians and their wives, among who were Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, and Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.
