The Nigerian army said on Thursday that it had set free 59 people held by Boko Haram, among whom were 29 women and 25 children.

In an offensive against the Islamist group, the military stormed two jihadist camps in the Konduga district of Borno on Wednesday where the hostages were freed.

According to army spokesman Tukur Gusau. "During the operation a number of terrorists were killed."

A total of 29 women, 25 children and 5 elderly men were freed. One of the freed hostages Mallam Modu Goni, revealed that a large number of militants abducted him and several fellow villagers last week, and he was forced to go several days without food before the army came to their rescue.

The army had earlier this week freed 30 other hostages, including 21 children and an elderly man.

***We say kudos to the Nigerian army***
