FIFA's secretary general, Jerome Valcke was relieved of his duties on Thursday on allegations that he was part of a deal to sell 2014 World Cup tickets well above face value.

According to the football governing body, Valcke "has been put on leave and released from his duties effective immediately until further notice.

"Further, FIFA has been made aware of a series of allegations involving the Secretary General and has requested a formal investigation by the FIFA Ethics Committee."

The announcement came hours after a former FIFA ticketing partner alleged that World Cup tickets were being sold in Brazil at three or four times above face value.

According to reports, Valcke learned since April 2013 that tickets were being resold well above their initial price, against Brazilian law, however, the contract was not revised until after about eight months.

Valcke who served as right-hand man to Sepp Blatter was due to step down in February.
