The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of new military chiefs who were appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13.

The confirmed service chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Abayomi Olonishakin; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai; Chief Of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas and Chief Of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Air Vice-Marchal Monday Morgan was named Chief of
Defence Intelligence.

The president also appointed retired Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser.

After about four hours of rigorous screening, the senate formally confirmed the appointments of the military officials.

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, said their appointment was based on merit urging them to tackle Boko Haram, insurgency and oil theft in the country among other things.

Saraki assured that the senate will support them and provide the all necessary assistance to enable them succeed.

The House of Representatives is expected to hold a separate screening exercise for the service chiefs soon.
