A federal court has ordered that the former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, and his two sons be remanded in prison custody till September 28 for money laundry and 27 other charges.
The former governor and sons were accused of fraud, and arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday for receiving N1.35 billion kickback from a government contractor allegedly paid into accounts controlled by the governor and his sons.
Delivering the judgement, Justice Evelyn Anyadike ruled that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody because the EFCC claimed it lacked enough facilities to accommodate them.
The defense counsel, Mr. Effiong however pleaded that the accused be kept in EFCC facilities, because remanding them in prison custody will amount to a breach on their fundamental human rights.
The prosecuting counsel, objected to the plea however, saying, the facilities of EFCC both in Kano and Abuja were full to capacity
The judge ruled that the accused persons be remanded pending the hearing of their bail applications on the 28th of September.
