The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has inquired of the leadership of the National Assembly to explain to Nigerians how its annual budget rose from N23.347 billion in 2003 to N154.2 billion in 2015.

The NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba, made this call in Abuja, during a visit to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, with other members of the Labour Union executive.

The Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the body constitutionally saddled with fixing the salaries and allowances of public and judicial office holders, was also asked to explain to Nigerians how the salaries and allowances of “certain political, public and judicial office holders” numbering about 17,474 summed up to be N1.126 trillion annually.

In 2003 the budget for the National Assembly was N23.347 billion, but rose to N66.488 billion in 2007, and then further increased to N104.825 billion in 2008. This he said calls for concern and Nigerians need explanations.

The NLC leader, decried the lack of openness and transparency in the budget of the National Assembly.

Wabba further declared that according to information available, the RMAFC had set the salaries and allowances of “certain political, public and judicial office holders numbering 17,474 at N1.126 trillion annually since 2009.

According to the NLC president, the earnings of political office holders gulped a huge chunk of the  country’s revenue and this was neither acceptable nor sustainable.
