President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to all Nigerians to take the postponement of the 2015 general elections in good faith.
The president's appeal was contained in a statement on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.
Abati quoted Jonathan as noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a responsibility to conduct credible polls in which all eligible Nigerians have the opportunity to exercise their voting right without any hindrance.
The presidential spokesman said Jonathan reassured the nation of his commitment to the sanctity of May 29, 2015 as the terminal date of his first term in office.
Abati said the president also strongly reaffirmed that May 29 "is, has been, and will remain sacrosanct".
"The president appeals to all stakeholders to accept the adjustment of the election dates by INEC in good faith, as the electoral body has a responsibility to conduct credible elections in which every Nigerian of voting age is afforded the opportunity to exercise their civic right without any form of hindrance", he said.
INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega on Saturday announced new dates for the 2015 general elections from February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11 respectively, citing advice from the security chiefs of their inability to provide adequate security cover for the polls if held on the initially set dates.
