Vice Presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed of the Labour Party (LP) emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to Nigeria's constitution in the presidential election process. Speaking at a conference titled "Nigeria on Trial: Does Democracy Matter?" organized by the Coalition of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, Datti highlighted the significance of upholding democratic principles in accordance with the constitution.
Expressing his belief in democracy over dictatorship, Datti stressed that democracy must be practiced diligently. He underscored the essence of the constitution in establishing and maintaining a democratic system, stating that democracy cannot exist without it.
Datti drew attention to the distinction between the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act. Emphasizing the primacy of the constitution, he highlighted its provisions for the judiciary, armed forces, police, and the National Assembly, emphasizing their indispensable role in the democratic process.
Furthermore, Datti emphasized that the constitution outlines the necessary requirements for the valid election of a president. Encouraging a sense of nationalism among the audience, he refrained from elaborating further due to the potential backlash and respecting the advice he had received.
The vice presidential candidate asserted that democracy belongs to the people who actively practice it and reap its dividends. He commended the ongoing struggle to uphold democratic values and cautioned against anyone misrepresenting his statements abroad.
