Usman, a 13-year-old Almajiri from Maiduguri, has captured the attention of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, due to his entrepreneurial spirit. Usman revealed that he began shining shoes because he dislikes begging, and he isn't currently in school because he lacks a sponsor.
The Governor learned about Usman through a Twitter user with the handle @el_bonga, who shared his story online. El Bonga's tweet read, "This is 13-year-old Usman, an Almajiri boy from Maiduguri. Because he doesn’t like to beg, he learnt how to shine and repair shoes from his brother where he earns an average of N500 a day. When I asked him about school, he said: 'even if I want to school, no one will sponsor me.'"
Governor El-Rufai was impressed by Usman's work ethic and responded by saying, "Where is this industrious boy? How old is he? Kindly bring him to me in Kaduna. I will sponsor him to attend a boarding primary school and upon completion until he graduates from university by the Grace of God."
Usman's story is a shining example of the determination and perseverance that many young Nigerians possess. Despite the challenges he has faced, Usman has refused to succumb to the temptation of begging and instead, has found a way to provide for himself.
Governor El-Rufai's gesture towards Usman is commendable and will undoubtedly inspire other individuals in positions of power to support and uplift young people like Usman who are determined to succeed in life. This act of kindness highlights the importance of investing in education and providing opportunities for young people to achieve their dreams
