Godswill Akpabio
Godswill Akpabio

The nomination of Godswill Akpabio as the next Senate President has received criticism from the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF). Yerima Shettima, the National President of AYCF, expressed his opposition to Akpabio's nomination and suggested that a competent Senate President could be found in the South East.

Shettima called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritize national unity by reconsidering Akpabio's nomination. He argued that the party's decision to select someone from Akwa Ibom for the position was not in line with established zoning principles and went against the concept of fairness. Shettima emphasized that the APC should take into account pressing issues such as financial instability, rising debt, regional tensions, and the prevailing insecurity across the country. He warned against further accumulating debt, as it would exacerbate the already precarious situation.

While acknowledging the need for the APC to reassess its stance, Shettima also emphasized the responsibility of the South East to actively participate in national affairs. He called for a more nationalistic approach from the region, urging them to actively engage and contribute to the national agenda.

In the spirit of fostering unity, Shettima urged the government to include representatives from the South East in key positions, thus ensuring that all regions of the country are adequately represented. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and working together as a cohesive nation.
