Godwin Obaseki
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has launched an investigation into alleged cases of fraud and criminal activities at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma. The governor, during a courtesy visit by the executive members of AAU Alumni Association Worldwide, expressed his commitment to arresting and prosecuting anyone found guilty in accordance with the law.
Governor Obaseki commended the alumni association for their support in improving the university and making it globally competitive. He emphasized the importance of developing and growing AAU to maintain high standards in infrastructure and learning. He urged the alumni association to join forces with the government to safeguard the institution against individuals seeking to harm it.
The governor denounced the actions of individuals claiming to be part of a union who have engaged in criminal conduct, such as harassing students and selling transcripts. He made it clear that these activities would not be tolerated, as they undermine the integrity of the university. Governor Obaseki vowed to fight for the university's future, asserting that Edo people must reclaim their institution from those seeking to damage it.
Governor Obaseki highlighted the university's troubled past, with previous attempts to rescue it proving unsuccessful. However, instead of shutting it down, the government has established a Special Intervention Team (SIT) to address the deep-rooted issues. The SIT head, Mr. Andrew Olotu, revealed that the university staff have been involved in various illegal activities, including selling examination question papers, harassing female students, and profiting from the collection of transcripts and certificates.
Dr. Clifford Omozeghian, the President of the AAU alumni association, expressed gratitude to the governor and the SIT for their efforts in revitalizing the institution. He pledged the association's collaboration with the government and relevant authorities to propel AAU to new heights.
Governor Obaseki concluded by affirming the government's determination to rectify the situation and restore the university's reputation. He urged all stakeholders to support the ongoing efforts to rid AAU of corruption and politics, enabling it to provide a better education for the people of Edo State.
