President Buhari appoints Mahmud Yakubu as new INEC chairman.

Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has been confirmed by the Council of states as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation came at the council's emergency meeting on Wednesday which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In addition to the confirmation of the new chairman, five new INEC national commissioners were approved. They are:
  • Amina Zakari: Northwest
  • Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine: North central 
  • Baba Shettima Arfo: Northeast
  • Soyebi Adedeji Solomon: Southwest and
  • Mohammed Mustafa Lecky: South-South.
It would be recalled that Mrs. Zakari, who is among the newly confirmed national commissioners was appointed as INEC's acting chairman on June 30 shortly after the former Chairman, Attahiru Jega's tenure elapsed.

The new INEC chairman, Mr. Yakubu, who is a professor of history and international studies, was the executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, before his appointment.
