Former American President Jimmy Carter announced on Wednesday that he has cancer, and it has spread to other parts of his body.
Carter, 90, who had enjoyed relatively good health despite his age, had a "small mass" removed from his liver during surgery earlier this month. He said on Wednesday that "recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body."
The origin of the cancer in his body is not yet clear, however, Carter's family, reportedly has a history of pancreatic cancer which he lost his father, brother and two sisters to.
The size of the mass in his body and how far the cancer has spread will determine the long-term health of the former president.
Carter, a Democrat, was elected to the presidency in 1976 but was defeated by Ronald Reagan four years later.
After leaving office, he was praised for the work of the Carter Center, the charity he runs from his current home in Atlanta.
