President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday expressed that it was time for Nigerians to act rather than merely talk about agriculture sustaining the nation's economy, since crude oil  would no longer suffice as Nigeria's major revenue source.

The president made this declaration when the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) president, Dr Kanayo Nwanze, paid him a visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“It’s time to go back to the land. We must face the reality that the petroleum we had depended on for so long will no longer suffice. We campaigned heavily on agriculture, and we are ready to assist as many as who want to go into agricultural venture.” President Buhari assured.

IFAD was tasked to research ways to improve on productivity of farmers, dry season farming, and innovative ways of combating the shrinking of the Lake Chad.

The President also pledged to reduce the bureaucracies in accessing government assistance by farmers.

"We will try and articulate a programme and consult organisations like IFAD for advice.” the President added.
