The National Planning Commission (NPC) has been ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari to produce the framework for a 2016 national budget that will reduce recurrent expenditure and prioritize developmental projects.

This directive was given after receiving a briefing from the Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr. Bassey Akpanyung, at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement said the president informed the commission's executive secretary and directors that capital projects must now be given the fullest possible priority.

The President expressed that Nigeria cannot achieve real development without adequate investment in capital and infrastructural projects.

The Executive Secretary of the NPC had informed President Buhari that Nigeria’s planning system was was being set back by many challenges like non-alignment of national plans with the annual budget and a lack of adequate capacity in various government ministries in the Planning, Research and Statistics departments.
