Twelve oil workers have died in a pipeline explosion that occurred on Thursday afternoon at Agip’s oil fields in Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Mr Filipo Cotalini, a spokesman for the parent company of Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOCO), on Friday, in a statement said three others were injured in the explosion that occurred at the oil spill site.
The cause of the explosion was being investigated by a team comprising officials, representatives of the host community and the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment.
"The cause of an explosion which occurred yesterday, 9 July, late in the afternoon, at the site of the repair works of the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line, previously damaged by acts of sabotage, is under investigation" the statement read.
"The explosion led to the death of 12 members of the maintenance team of a local service company, with three others being injured. The cause of the incident is still under investigation" the statement further added.
The company has however expressed its deepest condolences to the families of those involved in this tragic accident
