The Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, where 67 people were killed in September 2013, by al-Shabab militants, has reopened.

About half the shops are opening again after extensive renovations.

"Exactly 22 months ago we had one of the saddest days in Kenyan history" said Evans Kidero, governor of the city. "As a nation we cried, we mourned, but Westgate is back"

US President Barack Obama is expected to visit Nairobi next week, and according to the City's governor, the reopening of the mall is a sign the
Capital city was now safe.

"Today we are excited because we are back on our feet, and we can convince the world that terrorism is not bringing us down," said Ben Mulla, one of the survivors of the siege.

It is however not yet clear if parts of the mall that were badly damaged by fire are reopening.

Islamist group al-Shabab of Somalia in 2013 claimed responsibility for the attack on the mall, killing 67 people. The group claimed it carried out the attack in response to Kenya's military operations in Somalia.
