The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail to former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, his two sons and another accused person.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole in his ruling over the bail applications of Lamido and other accused persons, granted temporary freedom to Lamido on self-recognizance.
Lamido's two sons Aminu and Mustapha and the other accused person, Abubakar Wada, were also granted bail to the sum of 25 million naira each, directing them to submit their passports to the court registrar.
The accused persons were ordered to provide two sureties each, one of which must be a civil servant on grade level 16 or a businessman who owns about N75milion landed property in Abuja or Jigawa State.
Lawyer to the EFCC, Mr. Chile Okoroma, had opposed the bail applications on the grounds that the accused might jump bail and urged the court to refuse the application.
However, Mr. Joe Agi (SAN) who is the lead lawyer to Lamido, urged the court to discountenance the argument of the EFCC in their counter-affidavit, asking it to take judicial notice of the fact that his clients have been on administrative bail of the EFCC and will not jump bail. He therefore urged the court to grant his clients bail on liberal terms.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Lamido and his two sons on a 28-count charge of alleged involvement in N1.3billion money laundering.
Lamido and the other accused persons were arraigned last week in Kano.
