The US has urged the Federal Government to prosecute urgently the masterminds behind the recent Boko Haram attacks on a market in Gombe and a prayer ground in Damaturu.
According to reports, at least 60 people were killed in the attacks and many injured.
In a media note handed to journalists yesterday, State Department Spokesperson, Mr. John Kirby, strongly condemned the attacks and assured that the US government would help Nigeria and its neighbors counter Boko Haram, through bilateral assistance and through support to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF), being established by countries battling the terrorist organization.
“We reiterate the United States’ continued support for Nigeria’s efforts to bring those responsible for these attacks and previous attacks to justice” Kirby said in the media note.
The UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has also condemned the attacks, saying the atrocious attacks were an assault on the beliefs of all people.
Mr. Ban offered his condolences to the families of the deceased, reaffirmed his solidarity with the people of Nigeria and the UN’s support for the Nigerian government in its fight against terrorism.
