Latest reports have it that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, who are front runners in the race to be the US presidential candidates for the Republican and Democratic parties, have secured comfortable victories in the crucial New York primary election.

Mrs Clinton, after beating Bernie Sanders, said her victory for the Democratic nomination was already in sight.

Mr Trump had said that his nearest rival Ted Cruz was "just about mathematically eliminated", adding that he would get more delegates than "anyone projected even in their wildest imaginations".

With more than 98% of the results in, Mr Trump is leading with just over 60% of the vote while Mrs Clinton has just under 58%.

Trump was reported to have recently brought in several experienced political hands to manage his campaign after a few weeks of instability.

Speaking at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Trump, referring to the people of New York said: "I have to say to the people that know me the best, when they give us this kind of a vote it's just incredible.

"Tomorrow, we go back to work," Trump said during his victory speech.
